Alpine is a framework for running virtual SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud) network switches. It provides a standard model for instantiating SONiC virtual switches and deploying various topologies. Alpine leverages Kubernetes to build large-scale fabrics (more than 100 virtual switches) spread across multiple worker nodes. Kubernetes is a container orchestration platform that provides a scalable and reliable way to deploy and manage containerized applications. Alpine uses Kubernetes to manage the lifecycle of virtual switches, including provisioning, initial configuration, and connectivity. Alpine provides a scalable, reliable, and cost-effective way to build and test near-production topologies. Integration with CI/CD pipelines will provide low-cost pre-submit test results. Alpine has the potential to accelerate the adoption of SONiC-based networks by making it easier for vendors to develop and deploy SONiC-based products.
